Having a yard sale is not only a good way to get rid of old items you’re storing in your home, but it’s also a great way to make some quick cash before moving. In the summertime, many people live for local yard sales because they can often find amazing items at incredibly low prices. If you’re planning a yard sale, you want to know that you’re making the most profit off of your efforts.
1. Plan What Will Be Sold
You first need to plan what is going to be sold at the yard sale. Baby items and furniture often sell the fastest and for the most money, so these items should be considered before setting up for the sale. Ideally, you want items that people will be more willing to buy rather than a bunch of junk that’s only a day away from being thrown out.
2. Put Up Signs
You need to advertise that you’re having a yard sale. This can be done by putting up signs on your property or the corner by your road if this is legal in your area. The best way to know if it’s legal to put signs on corners is to go to your local municipal office and speak with one of the town representatives. The more you advertise, the more people will know that you’re having a yard sale.
3. Word of Mouth
Before the sale, tell people that you’re having a yard sale. This could be friends or relatives and tell them to let others know about the sale as well. You want as many people to know about the sale as possible.
4. Low Prices
If you price your yard sale items too high, you’re risking not selling anything or just a few items. This won’t be worth your time if you’re sitting out there for four to six hours, so you need to price things low enough to catch people’s attention but not low enough to where you’re not making a profit.
5. Offer an Incentive
Some yard sales sell other items, like water and prepackaged foods, to drive in more customers who will not only buy food and water off of you but will be more likely to purchase items that you have for sale.
6. Easy Parking
If people can’t find parking to get to your sale, they probably won’t buy anything, and you’ll be sitting out there for nothing. Make sure that you not only offer easy parking but that there is enough of it. This might mean moving your vehicles to allow people to park.
When you properly plan for a yard sale, you’ll be able to make the most money that you’re able to and will find that you clear out those closets, drawers and spare rooms of all of the items that you no longer want or need. Give yourself a few weeks to plan for a yard sale.
